February 2006 -"TOP 10 TIPS FOR FINDING A MATE WHO LOVES
SAILING"

Tired of dating the wrong person or of dating someone great but who
doesn't share your love of sailing? This Valentine's Day, Karin Anderson
and Beth Roberts authors of "Finding Your Mate Online: No Fear, No
Embarrassment, Just Love!" will show you how to meet the right person
who shares your passions! It doesn't matter whether you're dating
online, going on blind dates or meeting people on WSA day sails, their 10
instructive tips will help you find a mate who shares your passions. The
authors found their mates and got married for the first time in their '40's
with these great tips and will show you how to do the same!
March 2006 - In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, our junior staff commodore,
Karyn Jones will be serving her home cooked corned beef and cabbage! She will
also be presenting two movies on heavy weather sailing. Come down and join us
for a home cooked meal and two great movies.
May 2006 -Yumio Dornberg will join WSA and speak on downwind trim.
Yumio is a crewmember on several racing teams that have won national
titles - but his talk will be for everyone (we all want to go fast, right?).
July 2006 -This month's speaker is Ari Steinberg. In 1977-78, as a 17 year old,
Ari literally ran away to sail around the world, and found himself crew on the
Dutch vessel "Flyer", a Sparkman-Stevens designed racing boat that competed
in, and WON, the first Whitbread 'Round the World race. Ari shares with us
his experiences on this unique journey, and contrasts the race with its
current version, the Volvo Ocean Race. Ari is a regular in the sailing and
racing scene in Southern California, and currently crews on Alice Leahey's
J/105, and is an engaging and informative speaker.
August 2006 -This month's speaker is WSA's own Liz Hjorth. Liz has been a
long-time member of WSA, and is very active in the racing and sailing scene here
in Marina del Rey. Liz, along with a crew of WSA members, recently competed in
the Mayor's Cup, a women's match racing event, held in Long Beach in the
Catalina 37's.

Liz will speak about the Mayor's Cup regatta, and Match Racing in general. This
is a GREAT way to learn more about the nuances of match racing, and you'll
be well-prepared watch the America's Cup TV coverage in 2007. Liz's sailing
bio is outlined in the August Newsletter (see Newsletter on Home Page), check
out the "Member Spotlight" section.
September 2006 -Our September 12th meeting will feature a movie made by
the skipper and crew
of a bareboat charter – one of the crew was WSA’s own Diane Destiny, and she
and the other members of her party will show the movie they made of their 3
week trip cruising from St Lucia to Grenada.
October 2006 - The speaker for the WSA October General Meeting is Nick
Barran. Nick was
captain of the boat that was hit by a whale returning from Pacific Cup --
400+ miles off Hawaii at the time of the incident -- and sank. Phenomenal
preparation on the part of the owners and crew meant that within hours of
taking to the life raft, a rescue vessel was on hand and everyone returned
to land, safe and sound. Whether you race, cruise or daysail, this is a
lesson that we can all take to heart; it also reinforces the fact that boat
prep is the most vital part of sailing, no matter what type of sailing you
do.
December 2006 - Our next general meeting is Tuesday, December 12 at
SMWYC, in Marina del Rey
at the end of Mindanao Way. At this meeting we'll have our annual
Installation Dinner and Holiday Party. We'll start with appetizers in the
bar (chips and salsa, pitas and hummus) at 6:30pm. Dinner will be served at
7:30pm, there will be a holiday salad bar in the middle of the dining room
with salad plates and a mixed bread basket for starters. After salad,
members and guests will proceed to the main course served by Conrad (the
chef at SMWYC): Choice of Salmon with a dill or Dijon sauce or Rotisserie
Chicken. Both entrees are served with garlic herb mashed potatoes, and a
grilled vegetable medley Dessert will be a chocolate fudge cake. Yum!!
Members $20 and non-members $25.
